Home Sweet Dominican Home

This is the Makarios house; it's a duplex and we rent both sides to provide housing for groups that come to work. It's in Puerto Plata, in an interesting neighborhood that is a combination of nice homes (like ours) and some random partially built homes/shacks. But we do have a nice view (to the North is the coast and South is a mountain).

We take public transportation to the school each day, which includes an approx. 15 min walk to the main road, then an approx. 15 min. ride, and whenever we want to get in to town or anywhere else. The DR's form of public transportation is either a taxi (most expensive), motoconcho (motorcycle/dirt bike), public car (like a taxi, but run a common route and others jump in if room), and the cheapest is the gua-gua (below - sounds like gwa-gwa and is a mini-bus/van type contraption in which they stuff as many people as possible). The record so far for people on one gua-gua was 32...don't tell my mom!

It's definitely a different and interesting way to live, and Makarios has been blessed with the house that we currently have, and are actually in the process of building a new one much closer to Montellano and the school. More on that to come!

The Lord's teaching me a lot about the things of the world that we cling to for identity, such as job titles/roles, posessions, and even where we live, instead of to what He says we are here for - His Glory.

"Don't tell my Mom"...? Laurin, haven't I ever told you about the Zeta's winning the "Squash the Bug" contest in college? We got 18 girls layered into a VW Beattle and I was on the bottom!! Of course, no one was driving it anywhere...
